2009 New Zealand Paragliding Cross-Country Championships

April 1st 2008 to March 31st 2009

Updated by the NZ PG XC Champs administrator, Tim Percival.

Back

Here's the confirmed standings and wrap up of the 2009 competition!

Looking back at the season, weather-wise it seemed a little bit "unusual". It started well, with a good October through to early December, with even the North Island getting some really good days, but then, disappointingly, the high summer months of January and February were largely blown out. March was quite flyable, but suffered from big inversions and stability. The paragliding league competitions, usually a good source of XC flights, had particularly bad luck with the weather. As a result of all this, overall entries this year (100 flights) were one third down on the 5 year average (158 flights), and few qualified for the XC Rover class.

Top placings went to those pilots who were flying during the October to early December favourable period, with the overall winner, Dean Straker, also taking advantage of the extended XC season of his home region of Nelson and doing enough to edge out runner up, Bryan Moore of Wanaka.  But it was close! (see: >> Category Winners).

Season Highlights and Statistics

(see also: >> 2009 Season Best Flights).

Thank you to all who submitted flights so we could see where there was good flying to be had, and well done on achieving your NZ cross-country kms!  :)

Last year's champion, Bryan's tally this year included 80+km flights from Treble Cone and Coronet Peak. (The only person to manage such a distance from multiple sites this season).

2nd Runner Up

Jeff Ripley

Jeff set site records for Pukemore, Puketutu and Kaimai in the process.

2009 Women's XC Champion

Eva Walton

On the back of a very good 35km FAI triangle during the Nationals, Eva picks up her 2nd Women’s XC Champ title, 10 years after winning her first.

XC Rover Champion

Jeff Ripley

With his tally including the best flights of the season for the North Island sites Pukemore, Kaimai, Paeroa and Moirs, Jeff convincingly takes out his first XC Rover title.

Best Rookie (first-time competitor)

Rob Boyle

In his first season of out-landings, Rob has notched up a couple of very respectable 35+km flights, placing him 10th overall.

Tandem Champion

Daron Brinsdon

Daron picks up his first Champs’ Tandem class title on his first attempt!

North Island Champion

Jeff Ripley

Jeff takes the North Island title with a total of 197 points - the best North Island total for 10 years!1 (See above regarding Jeff's best-of-season flights).

Longest North Island Flight

Jeff Ripley

68.9km from Pukemore, Waikato.

Longest South Island Flight

Dean Straker

96.5km from Inwoods Lookout, Nelson.
